Evangelical Church at Hinton
Sunday, July 6, the first services of the Evangelical church of North America were conducted in the Hinton Community Hall. Services included Sunday school at 9 a.m., worship service at 9:45 a.m., and evening service at 7:30 p.m. The pastor, Rev. Derry Long and his wife, Marlyce, arrived in Hinton June 30, and resided in the parsonage located at Main and Prospect streets, the former Lamar Jones home. The Evangelical church of North America was just over 7 years old at the time. It was organized in Portland, Oregon, on June 4,1968 by ministers and laymen who chose not to be a part of the popular ecumenical movement. |

The Grace Evangelical church of North America in Hinton held a groundbreaking service Sunday, May 29, following the morning worship service. The newly organized church held its first services in July of 1975 when Rev. Derry Long was sent to Hinton as pastor. Members had been meeting in the Hinton Community building while formulating plans for a new church building. The building, located on Prospect Street just off Main, is a 36x70 structure with a seating capacity of approximately 135 and a walk-in basement with a large fellowship area. The church set September 1 as the date for the first services in the new facilities. The Grace Evangelical church is part of the North

Evangelical church of North America was founded in 1968 and now
has churches from the West Coast to Pennsylvania in the East, and
as far south as Mississippi. |
